Ethnochoreology (also dance ethnology, dance anthropology) is the study of dance through the application of a number of disciplines such as anthropology, musicology (ethnomusicology),ethnography, etc. The word, itself, is relatively recent and means, literally, “the study of folk dance”, as opposed to, say, the formalized entertainment of classical ballet. Why not classical ballet? In what sense is classical ballet not also a form of folk dance? All forms of dance are a cultural form in most respects, not least of all the fact that they are living, changing reflections of the people who practice those art forms. In fact the word ethno refers broadly to culture or people and the word choreology refers to the study of dance notation, so the explanation in Wikipedia is a little lacking. Why is this important? Well to me it is important because ethnography has been shown to be a useful study methodology applied to classical ballet by academics like Helena Wulff and others. This is a research direction that appeals to me.
